Wanted: Friends & Aquaintances

Ok.  I am trying to figure out where to start to become more extroverted.  Were does one go to meet and make new friends?  How do you do such a thing?  I have never had too much of a problem with business associates and the like, but when it comes to try and find people with like interests (to some degree) I never knew where to go.  My interests aren't exactly out there for all to practice.  Of course, there is the internet, but I feel that is a bit of a cop out.  Are we really meeting new people, or just posting the life we wish we had while interacting with others doing the same?  I can do that playing the SIMS.  I feel brash inviting myself to be someone's 'friend' on places like LJ or MySpace, but I guess that's the whole idea of the exercise.

  Hmmm, I may not be the best person to answer this, seeing as I don't have that many friends on my flist, and even fewer of them actually respond to my posts ... or me to theirs...
  But most of them I have met through communities. Several are from a community I don't frequent any more - but still like the people, some are from fish/aquarium comms, some are friends of friends that I met on other people's LJ's. And a few are purely to read fanfic.
  I guess try joining up at some communities that you're interested in and as you talk with people you'll know who you want to be friends with.

  I am a very outgoing person and I've been blessed with multitudes of friends. I'd like you to be one of them. I saw your comments on Rachel Caine's post and went back to read some of your LJ. I'm not an aspiring writing, however, I am an avid reader. My LJ posts tend to be about what's going on in my life and can get to be downright whiny. I've been told that's the purpose of LJ though. =) Anyway, I'd like to read your work and get to know you better. Hope you're having a good week.

    Thanks Kassi. Glad to meet you. As you see, I don't post as often as I should in LJ, nor MySpace which I also have. Too busy rewriting (bad habit), working, and managing my family. I actually meant to start my LJ like you have, but it just never got around to that. Oh well.
    I started out writing when I was a teen, then life interfered, but have always been an avid reader myself. I go through anywhere from 3 to 6 books per week, depending on the size and how much of my interest they grab. So a couple years ago, I decided I wanted to give it a go again, writing that is, and spent the first year touching up on the basics, and this year I am actually working on a couple of shorts for workshops and contests. I don't do shorts well, too wordy as you see here, but I figured if I could tackle them, maybe I could finish the first of my phobia novels.
